WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow users to easily search for media sent or received in chats.
The feature was first spotted by WABetaInfo who is known for finding hidden features. Known as ‘Advanced Search Mode’, the feature is in-development on Android but has been available on the WhatsApp Beta version, 22.214.171.124 for iOS devices.
Currently, WhatsApp utilizes a simple search system with no advanced options to filter messages. So users have to scroll through a ton of messages to look for that one meme which can be either an image, GIF or video. Alternatively, users can scroll through a collection of photos, videos, GIFs and other media in Gallery but that is also painstaking.
From the screenshots, it can be seen that users will be able to use Advanced Search for a particular type of media file. So users can filter search for photos, videos, audio, GIFs, docs and even links to easily sift through the results. You certainly cannot find links in Gallery.
Additionally, WABetaInfo also spotted a field where passwords for encrypted chat backups will need to be entered. As reported earlier, encrypted chat backups will allow users to do the namesake and let users encrypt their WhatsApp chat backups to make sure that neither Google nor WhatsApp can access the data.
The encrypted backups were reported to be password protected and the new screenshots show just that.
The encrypted backups were reported to be password protected and the new screenshots show just that. At the moment, the messages exchanged on WhatsApp are encrypted via end-to-end encryption. But Google Drive backups that are not encrypted, until password-encryption comes into play. So users, when restoring chats from backups, will need to enter the correct passwords otherwise all their old conversations will not be accessible.
It is important to note that these features were found manually in the 2.20.117 beta version of the app on Android. There is no fixed date when these features will be released by WhatsApp or even if they are the same at the time of release.
