Almost a year after the launch of the communication satellite GSAT-31, ISRO has launched its next geostationary satellite. The GSAT-30 was successfully launched aboard the Ariane-5 launch vehicle from the Spaceport in French Guiana at 2:35 AM along with Thales Alenia Space’s Eutelsat Konnect satellite.

GSAT-30 is the 41st communication satellite that was designed and based around the enhanced I-3K platform by ISRO. With a design life of 15 years, the satellite is meant to replace the INSAT-4A. The satellite will provide navigation and communication services, connecting the entirety of the Indian subcontinent. It will also help in scientific research by providing recorded observational data of Earth. The G-SAT 30 is also set to deliver high-quality television, telecommunications and broadcasting services.

ISRO Chairman Dr. K Sivan explained: “GSAT-30 has a unique configuration of providing flexible frequency segments and flexible coverage. The satellite will provide communication services to Indian mainland and islands through Ku-band and wide coverage covering Gulf countries, a large number of Asian countries and Australia through C-band.”

GSAT-30 was placed in a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit 40 minutes after the launch and in the following days will be maneuvered into a Geostationary Orbit. The two solar arrays and the antenna reflectors on the satellite and it will be operational after some in-orbit tests. GSAT-30 is the 24th geostationary satellite built by ISRO to be launched by Arianespace.

Eutelsat Konnect is a satellite developed by Thales Alenia Space as part of the Neosat program by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the French CNES. The satellite will provide shared Internet access in some countries of Africa through public Wi-Fi terminals offering rates of up to 100 Mbps. Eutelsat Konnect is the 163rd satellite designed by Thales Alenia Space that was launched by Arianespace.
