Apple has already made quite a lot of noise in the market with its Apple Watch series. It appears that the company is now working on a new type of wearable based on a patent awarded to Apple by the United States Patent And Trademark Office (USPTO). The new patent is titled, “Devices, methods, and user interfaces for a wearable electronic ring computing device” and was originally filed back in April 2012 and got granted on earlier this week on October 15, 2019.
Patent describes a wearable ring device with a touchscreen that includes a processor, a wireless transceiver, rechargeable power source, and a microphone connected to the computer processor. The computer processor will be housed in the annular member with the wireless transceiver electrically connected to it. This wireless transceiver will also be configured to communicate with at least one external electronic device wherein a “first predefined hand gesture” can cause an action to take place on the connected external electronic device.
Also, a voice command, finger tap, or a hand gesture might be used to control the actions on an external device via the wearable ring. Additionally, the ring could also have haptic feedback, a dial control and motion sensor for twisting gestures. It could also embody a telephone module for making phone calls. But, overall, it’s quite clear that this “smart ring” would not be a standalone product and would instead work in combination with some other device like an iPhone or an iPad.
However, it must be noted that although the features of this new ring-like wearable device are going to be different, it’s not entirely an alien concept. In fact, smart rings have been in the development phase for years now and have begun gaining attention only recently with some brands packing in different tech inside these tiny devices. Few of the features integrated within these smart rings include fitness trackers, NSC chips, or SOS buttons that function while remaining connected to your phone or some other external device.
As far as the Apple patent is concerned, there are no details yet as to when or if this new “ring”-like wearable device will be commercially released by Apple. However, we can’t wait to see what Apple’s take on this new smart ring would be like.
